Burnham Beeches, March 2009

mcc Excursion to Burnham Beeches - Steve Green

This was a 'walk with cameras' organised by Paul Franklin. A dozen turned up, and the weather was right on forecast - sun, wind, rail, hail but mostly sun. Mark R, in the second picture, is photographing a huge, active ant heap.

The yellow thing is Skunk Cabbage (Lysichiton Americanus). It pongs. It can also - apparently - melt the snow around it in Winter to survive better. "Mostly found in North America, it can also be found growing wild in marshy areas in England, for example at Esher Commons as well as Wisley Gardens, and in Scotland." Now it is in Burnham Beeches too! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Skunk_Cabbage.
