External Competitions

There are two main series of external competitions in which Maidenhead Camera Club is involved. We are members of CACC (The Chilterns Association of Camera Clubs) and regularly compete with other Camera Clubs in the region. The club has also recently become involved with the inter-club competitions hosted by DSLR User Magazine. The 2009 entries can be seen here.

Nine Clubs Competition [12 Mar 2010]

The annual 'Nine Clubs' competition was hosted by Bracknell CC on 11th Mar. The images were marked out of 10 and the final scores were:

  • 1st 56 Farnborough CC
  • 2nd 49 Bracknell CC
  • 3rd 45.5 Basingstoke CC

Farnborough were the runaway winners with 5 of their 6 entries held back among the final 8 images and they finished with two '10s' and two '9.5s'. Well done to Paul Morgan for securing our highest score of 8.5 on the night. There were an overwhelming majority of natural history images from all clubs, relatively few landscapes and only one people image. The infamous 'porcelain frog' made no less than 4 appearances on the evening with one from Farnborough scoring a 10.

Rosebowl Round 3 - Win for Maidenhead! [21 Feb 2010]

The third round of the CACC "Chilterns Rosebowl" was hosted by Buckingham CC on 17th Feb. The final scores were:

  • 1st 255 Maidenhead CC
  • 2nd 252 Ealing & HH PS
  • 3rd 242 Buckingham CC
  • 4th 239 Hemel Hempstead PS

The judge used an unusually wide range of marks for a competition with scores from 13 to 20. It was a good win for us, even though we didn't score any maximums.

PAGB Cup - Natural History [February 2010]

The results of the PAGB Natural History competition are below. Only the top 10 scores count and we finished with a disappointing 114 points which put us in 47th place. Given the scores we got for some of our best images the winners must have been stunning. The top 5 were:

  • 1st 139 Wigan 10
  • 2nd 132 Cambridge
  • 3rd 131 Leek
  • 4th 130 Cannock
  • 5th 128 Dorchester

3 Clubs Competition [4 Feb 2010]

The annual '3 Clubs' friendly competition is a mixed competition of 10 projected images and 8 prints. This year it was hosted by Stoke Poges and once again proved to be a close fought battle.

The overall scores were :

Projected Print Total
Stoke Poges 176 136 312
Maidenhead 176 134 310
Henley 166 134 300

Congratulations to Ingrid & Chris Gledhill who led our high scores in each section - well done.

It was interesting that the overall quality of the projected images was much stronger than the prints.

PAGB Cup Results - Part 1 [January 2010]

The results for the first part of the PAGB Great British cup are below. We finished in about the same position as last year at 57th out of the 92 clubs which is not a brilliant result. We scored 163 points in total and the top places were:

  • 1st 232 - Wigan 10
  • 2nd 217 - DAPA Group
  • 3rd 215 - Smethwick PS
  • 4th 207 - Arden PG
  • 5th 202 - Cambridge CC
  • 6th 200 - Amersham
The judging of the Natural History cup was delayed until a later date on account of the weather.

Remember that all scores are out of a maximum of 15!

CACC Rosebowl - Round 2 [15th December 2009]

The second round of the CACC "Chilterns Rosebowl" took place last night (15th December) at home between Field End PS, Leighton Buzzard PC, Park Street CC. We once again, finished 3rd, despite some high scoring images with 267 points. The final order was:

  • Field End - 275
  • Leighton Buzzard - 270
  • Maidenhead - 267
  • Park Street - 263
There were nine 20s awarded and two 'stars' (for the best images on the night). We claimed our fair share of these with Paul Morgan gaining one 20 and Steve Mundy two 20's and a 'star' but this was still not enough.

Once again the general image quality was excellent as reflected in the high number of 20's.

See below for the list of our entries and their scores.

CACC Rosebowl - Round 1 [6th October 2009]

The first round of the CACC "Chilterns Rosebowl" took place last night (6th October) at Harpenden and was between Woodley PC, Oxford PS, Harpenden PS and ourselves. We came a disappointing 3rd with 238 points. The final order was:

  • Oxford 256
  • Woodley 250
  • Maidenhead 238
  • Harpenden 224
There were two 20s awarded on the night - one for a cracking photo of an osprey coming in to the nest with a fish for the youngster, and an excellent landscape of a shoreline and inlet from above which was a welcome change from the 'norm' for landscapes. Our top score for the evening was 19 for 'Tree Frog' by Ingrid Gledhill - well done Ingrid.

Overall there were some wonderful images and I have no issue with the 2 maximums above but there were some 'not so good' too! The judge rattled through the scoring in record time yet still managed to offer some interesting comments and suggestions on each image. He was definitely one of the better judges I have seen in recent times although his scoring of our entries was a bit harsh I felt.

See below for the list of selected images and their scores.
