On Tuesday May 3rd 2011, Jill Foundling, from Jealotts Hill Research Centre will present her talk 'Art Meets Science' and to give you a flavour of what it is likely to include, here are a few photos to show you the sort of thing that will be presented on the night.

Polarised Light Microscopy

'Crystal Tips' By Cliff Hart

Polarised Light Microscopy reveals crystalline structures. These liquid crystals are similar to those used in your digital watch or LCD large screen television (if you're lucky enough to have one!) Lignification

'In The Pink' By Sarah Perfect and Laurie Boyden

Lignification is an important marker for abscission zones in plant tissues. We were looking for these zones in the fruit of a courgette variety who's fruit is easier to pick. The stains we were using turned lignified cells pink. The patters of lignin deposition can just be seen in the pink cells.
