The Dark Side
I entered this picture in the projected Image comp and it did not do well and the comment from the judge was it could have been out of a book, he was right in saying this, but then all we all need to do is find a real good picture in a book and take a picture of it and enter it. ( not really playing ball thou) As you may have guessed it was not from a book, but taken in my back garden with a 300mm lens.
I have tried to take clear pictures of the moon and failed loads of times is there any special way of doing this that a follow member can enlighten me with.
Picture details Exposure Time = 1/30",F Number = F11,Exposure Program = Shutter priority,ISO Speed Ratings = 200,Date Time Original = 2008-10-12 19:44:30,Date Time Digitized = 2008-10-12 19:44:30,Shutter Speed Value = 4.91 TV,Aperture Value = 6.92 AV,Exposure Bias Value = ±0EV,Metering Mode = Spot,Focal Length = 300mm
Maybe other members could post their pictures for comparison ?
Or just post up some of their own images.

Good pic, especially considering you didn't use any really fancy or expensive equipment.
People sometimes say it's difficult to judge the exposure of the moon because it's so small in the frame. However it's got the same lighting on it as the earth, so whatever exposure is right for, say, a beach in summer sunlight is what you need for the moon. As us old gits will confirm if you set the camera for ISO100, 1/125 shutter speed, and an aperture of f/11 or f/16, you'll be fine.

Jack - good looking pic! One of the first things I took a picture of when I got my SLR was a the moon, but it didn't come out looking the same as yours. Very nice. I only had a 200mm lens, so couldn't get close enough, but when I invest in a better zoom lens I'll give it another try. I'll try and add my pic for comparison.

Thank you Rod I will have to try "your settings" next time the sky is clear enough.
Tom your picture is clear enough for me I have not tried a 1/2 moon only full or nearly full (more to look at in the view finder) lots of my captures where not clear at all when I tried.
