The Gimp

GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It works on many operating systems, in many languages.

GIMP has loads of documentation: online manuals, web pages, HOWTOs, and published books. One book, Grokking the Gimp is also available online. You can also use most Photoshop books with a bit of experimentation to find out where things are on the menus.

If you use Linux you probably have GIMP already. If you use Windows or MacOS you will need to download it:
